R4YL HISTORY

Brian Demerest, a member of the Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club, gathered together both firefighters and community members to put on the first Run 4 Your Life on March 27, 2010. There were 260 runners, 5 teams, and 40 kids. Schenectady Fire Department, along with other local departments including Albany, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Amsterdam, Glens Falls, and Niskayuna. With the generous help of long time race partner Paul Harding of Martin, Harding, and Mazzoti, the first iteration of the race raised over $5000 that was donated to the American Heart Association.

Now in it’s 15th year the Run 4 Your Life has become the main source of fundraising for the Schenectady Firefighters Cancer Foundation. In 2012 a group of Schenectady Firefighters banded together to address a rapidly growing problem in the firefighting community. Firefighters are up to 200% more likely to contract upwards of a dozen forms of cancer as a result of exposure to carcinogens during the course of their duties. The Foundation was formed with the intent to address this problem through education and advocacy, and to lend financial assistance to those afflicted with the terrible disease.

The race now brings in over $30,000 annually that goes directly to the mission of the Foundation. It has seen upwards of 700 participants and now includes representation from every area career department as well as numerous volunteer departments as well. As a result of the 2019 novel coronavirus, the race now offers a virtual event that has drawn participation from all across the United States.

The Schenectady Firefighters Cancer Foundation is proud to offer this family-friendly, community event. All proceeds go directly towards the mission and the work of the Foundation, and in short improve the lives of Schenectady firefighters and their families when dealing with a diagnosis of cancer.
